Early Years - nursery and reception

The teaching of your Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) child through Nursery and Reception aims to instill a love for learning which they will carry with them into Year 1 and throughout the rest of their school journey. The Early Years teaching staff will work in partnership with you to ensure your child has a positive experience full of opportunities to grow and develop into happy and confident learners. At Dubmire we put personalised teaching and learning at the heart of our principles. You can be assured that your child will have their own 'key person' assigned to them who is able to recognise and draw upon their individual interests to advance their learning. The EYFS Framework will be implemented in a safe, nurturing and exciting learning environment. We endorse and will employ the three characteristics of effective teaching and learning; playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically.

Through play your child will investigate and experience new things and 'have a go'. Active learning can aid your child's concentration, encouraging them to keep on trying if they encounter difficulties and enjoy their achievements. Your child will be encouraged to have and develop their own ideas and make links between those ideas and to develop strategies for doing things, skills necessary to develop creative and critical thinking.

At nursery level in particular, the Framework directs the focus into igniting children's curiosity and enthusiasm for learning through developing such skills as communication and language, physical development and personal, social and emotional development. We can achieve this through the introduction of your child to an array of new and exciting topics from, for example, learning about the jungle, dinosaurs or space. Practical experience will also be provided from forest trips to baking, role play, sand and water and physical play. This can be engaging and motivating helping your child to be 'school ready'.

As your child moves to reception the focus will be on literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design reflecting the Framework. Your child will have daily phonics and math sessions. We will provide a balance between teacher and child led activities and will arrange both visits and visitors to help enrich the curriculum.

We will be able to chart your child's progress through informal observations of them taking part in a range of activities which will be recorded in their individual learning journal which is available to you. Each journal is unique and helps us to ensure that your child achieves a good level of development and reaches their Early Learning Goals at the end of the EYFS stage

As we move into the new academic year, we are particularly shining a spot light on physical development, pre-reading and writing skills and maximising your involvement in your child’s education. We look forward to welcoming your continued support in this. We encourage you to attend any parent, teacher, pupil engagement exercises.

EYFS is an exciting time for you and your child. We appreciate however that it can also be an apprehensive experience therefore, if you have any problems or queries, no matter how small, please do not hesitate to speak to one of the team who will be happy to help you.
